![]() Expect detailed environments to explore, a huge cast of characters and experimental weaponry. Powered by Source Engine, You will re-visit the inaugural role of Gordon Freeman and his memorable journey through the Black Mesa Research Facility. In HL1 I basically used the MP5 as a crutch because I didn't ever have a reason to use, say, snarks. Black Mesa is a re-envisioning of Valve Software's classic science fiction first person shooter, Half-Life. I did get annoyed with the 30 round magazine in the HECU sections, but it forced me to get more creative which was nice. I would have loved to see Black Mesa stay more true to their original design.Īs for the visual and weapon changes, ehh. The HECU AI in HL1 was phenomenal, especially for it's time. Sure in HL1 they can't shoot you while they're moving, but the AI is good enough that it feels like they're using actual tactics - more strategic movement/placement, ambushes, coordinated attacks, flushing you out with grenades, following you, etc. In HL1, they seem to work together as a group more and 'coordinate' with each other, instead of working as individual enemies like they do in Black Mesa. It's interesting to see the difference because in HL1 I don't really think having to stay still to shoot actually made them easier to fight. I 100% agree with what you're saying about the redesign of the HECU's AI. Feel free to state your opinions if the comments. I like Black Mesa, its just I think Half-Life did a lot of things better. While the doctors successfully reach the safe area outside of the Black Mesa, Calhoun is caught in a temporal harmonic reflux, traveling between Xen and the facility, even witnessing Gordon's capture by the HECU. Also the Nihilanth somehow looks even more like a giant baby. The four then narrowly escape through an older portal machine just as the HECU soldiers storm the underground facility. I personally think the MP5 looks like plastic. I like the old H.E.C.U designs so much more. All the human designs are quite off from the original. They look way too humanoid and barley resemble their source material. I'm not a very big fan of the character design changes. ![]() They completely ruined it for me in BMS by turning down its accuracy so much that I don't even use it anymore. I usually use it in Half-Life to take down controllers because its second fire mode is pretty accurate. The Hivehand was ruined even more somehow. I find it kinda useless in a lot of situations because of this. The guass gun's fire rate is way too slow. The crossbow can't hold enough ammo which is why I don't use it as often. Its not a problem when dealing with aliens, but it gets annoying when fighting H.E.C.U when having to reload while you're surrounded. Like the MP5 only has a 30 round magazine instead of a 50 round one. I'm not particularly fond of some of the weapon changes. ![]() Yes that is more realistic but takes away a lot of the fun the original H.E.C.U had. The BMS ones just run sideways and shoot at you. Plus grenade throwing also make the combat that much more fun. Sure, this makes them easier but more fun to fight. The H.E.C.U in Half-Life stay in place while they are firing at you. The H.E.C.U are no where near as fun as they were in Half-Life. First lets get the obvious out of the way.
